Kenpo Karate and the Karambit
Back when Steve Tarani and I met, we engaged in a conversation of our perspective martial arts disciplines. Steve had an extensive background in Indonesian and Philippine Arts and I had an extensive background in American Kenpo Karate. Steve had told me about his focus on the Karambit and how he had developed the Tarani Karambit training system. We then arranged to meet and exchange workout methods. When I saw Steve work the Karambit for the first time a huge "light bulb" went on within my head. The movements, patterns and applications looked very familiar, as if I already knew them. It was very similar to my Kenpo Karate movements I have studied for the past 30 years. The applications of Steve Tarani's Karambit merged with my Kenpo techniques was incredible. The combination of the Karambit Blade and the movements of each Kenpo technique were smooth and graceful. Little adaptation and the learning of new patterns of movement were not necessary. Only small adjustments had to be made.
Once I got the Karambit in my hand a whole new world of creativity opened up to me. I first started using the Karambit within my Kenpo forms and then moved through each belt level technique by technique Trial and error, some techniques will not be as suitable for a karambit as others. All in all a new branch of the Kenpo Karate System was born.Steve Tarani and I structured and formalized a Kenpo Karambit curriculum and launched the KKA (Kenpo Karambit Association) The Kenpo Karambit IS NOT a new art, It is a merge of two disciplines that follows the principles and concepts of Ed Parker's American Kenpo. I did not invent anything new. I mearly uncovered another vehicle to which Kenpo Karate can be applied. Each time I teach a kenpoist a technique, an explosion occurs and he/she is creating and inventing new applications within the technique I taught them. It is amazing what can be done with the Karambit
"Anyone who hasn't met Angelo at Blade Show or at one of the seminars, the guy is a super-hero martial artist in my book. Highly ranked and highly respected in the Kenpo Karate world, championship competitor Angelo Collado is not only tops in his field (and a wealth of Kenpo Karate knowledge) but also is phenomenal with a Karambit (okay so we've been training together for a long time).
.
Originally Angelo and I met some years ago and discussed the advantages of integrating the Karambit with Kenpo Karate and after much design, integration of our combined decades in the arts, comparing notes, careful planning, many hours of solid training and blessings from above - we combined the Karambit (and the art of the curved blade of Pencak Silat) with Kenpo Karate and founded Kenpo Karambit!!! (to find out more about this new martial art involving the Karambit - check out www.kenpokarambit.com). If you get a minute please welcome Angelo Collado with arms wide open as he and I are partners in Kenpo Karambit and will be doing a lot more demonstrations and seminars together! Thanks Angelo!!!"
-Steve Tarani
Steve Tarani is the one of the world's foremost authorities in the use of the Karambit. I have 30 years in Kenpo Karate and have traveled to world teaching and competing in the Kenpo Karate World. The combination of two top instructors will give credibility to our contribution of Kenpo Karambit to the Martial Arts World. I will continue to train with Mr. Tarani to continually evolve the Kenpo Karambit with the help and support of my Seniors and fellow Kenpoist.
The Patch
The development of the KKA patch is to signify that one trains within the KKA curriculum. There are many other who do train in both Philippino and Kenpo styles. The purpose of the KKA is to develop training methods to bring all the karambit people together to exchange ideas and to connect all those kenpoist who train with a Karambit together.
Since Kenpo Karambit is an extension of Kenpo Karate, The shape of the crest was not changed. The addition of the Karambits on either side function and represent the same as the original sides of the crest. The tiger and the dragon maintain their original positions within the crest as well. The inner pattern was filled with the representation of Steve Tarani's roots and representation of his Philippine/Mande Muda linage.
The Patch design concept was a collaboration of Edmund Parker Jr. and myself. Edmund Parker Jr. created the artwork for the patch with his incredible artistic talents.
